Holidays In January
New Years Day (January 1st)
When we think about New Year’s Day (NYD), it isn’t as much of an exciting day as you would think. The day before the last day of the year, New Year’s Eve, is an exciting day. Most people spend NYD as a “recovery day.” There are still some questions about NYD that come to mind. When did we start to celebrate? Was there a reason why? Really, is there any history behind it? So, I decided to do some research and let’s see what I found.
New Year's Day is a festival observed in most of the world on January 1st, the first day of the year in the modern Gregorian calendar. January 1st is also New Year's Day on the Julian calendar, but this is not the same day as the Gregorian one. We haven’t always been celebrating New Years on January 1st though. As it turns out, New Year’s Day was celebrated for the first time in 45 B.C., when the Julian calendar first took effect. Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there since we don’t follow the Julian calendar today.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 16th)
A lot of people hear Martin Luther King Jr. and instantly associate him with the, “I have a Dream” speech. It’s very true to associate the two with each other but he definitely did more than just make that speech. (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968).
On January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of a Baptist minister. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. King received a doctorate degree in theology and in 1955 helped organize the first major protest of the African American civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader.
At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

The easiest potted plants to grow during the winter include:

Zodiac Signs and Horoscopes of January
Capricorn December 22nd - January 19th
As this holiday month gets underway, Capricorn, you’re in a phase of completion in which it would be wise to tie up loose ends. The coming weeks until December 21 are your opportunity to find closure on issues that have been holding you back or sapping your energy. They might rise to the surface at this time, so you’ll have no choice but to deal with them. And if you need help handling anything, ask for it. You might feel like keeping a lower profile until the sun enters your sign on the twenty-first and you experience something like a mini rebirth. The early weeks of the month are a good time to get in touch with your dreams. They could have some useful guidance for you.
Aquarius January 20 - February 18
Aquarius, your social life is extremely buoyant this month, which is just as well because you’ll be able to take full advantage of the holiday party scene. There’s so much to be gained from mixing and moving in new circles, so you’ll certainly want to be out and about. This is also one of the best times for acting on a long-held dream. Something you’ve been planning could move higher up your list of priorities and be something you’re eager to start on. Feelings could flow around the time of the full moon in Gemini and your pleasure zone on December 7. The full moon aligns with assertive Mars in its retrograde phase, which could find you getting emotional if things aren’t working out as you’d hoped. You might be disappointed by something or someone, and your reaction could be stronger than you intended. Let it all out and you’ll feel much better.
